   2017

Welcome to another great year ending for the flight sim enthusiast. 2017 comes to a close having delivered some great news and innovation for the flight sim enthusiast.  Here at KwikPit it has been a rather laid back year just enjoying and marveling at some of the yearís greatest innovations.

Without a doubt the greatest  impact on flight simulation has to be Virtual Reality (VR). VR has brought a real sense of  flight that has never been experienced before. It has closed the gap of simulation and actually flying to the point where your senses are often unable to distinguish the difference between the two. Often youíll be reaching out to touch the instruments and gauges in front of you. Such is the advancement of VR flight today.

Getting Into VR

The world of VR flight, until recently has always been limited to the multi-million dollar military and commercial trainers to large extent. However with latest evolution of  technology integrating small high resolution displays and sensors in consumer market headsets  coupled with  todayís powerful PCs and graphics cards, technology have produced a practical and affordable VR system for the consumer.

Youíll find several VR headsets on the market with more emerging almost quarterly. For flight simulation currently the leaders are Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The price points on these have steadily declined since their introductions making either a great deal with value going to the Oculus rift for now considering it is at approximately fifty percent of itís introduction price, roughly down from $800.00 to $400.00.

These are first generation offerings with first generation advantages and drawbacks. Reading reviews and making your own personal judgment about each unit is a must.

Here are the two leading VR Headsets, the choice is yours with Oculus having a slight edge in flight simulation having had more development time in the genre.

The Oculus Rift is the premier VR headset for flight simulation at this time.

The HTC Vive is also a contender in the flight simulator VR game.

PC Requirements

Youíll need a gaming PC with some pretty decent specs. These specs are changing constantly though, research the requirements for a good VR capable PC. You may choose to upgrade, build or purchase a new turnkey system depending on your needs and budget.

Here are a few examples of PCs that meet VR requirements. Most will have at least an i5 processor or equivalent and a GTX 1060 video card at minimum.

Requirements are easing and prices for a midrange system may be surprisingly affordable.

VR Ready Flight Sims

There are several flight sims that are VR ready, some being titles that have been around for a while. There are some great titles that are free for the download.

Here are a few:

War Thunder is a free online combat simulator that has been upgraded to VR gaming for those with VR equipment and a PC system that meets requirements. Here is a the link to the site.

DCS World is an excellent highly detailed and realistic combat simulator that will take a while to master. Itís a free download that comes with two flyable planes that will keep you busy for months. There are add on modules that can be purchased separately.

DCS World

For general aviation there are several titles:

All of these except Aerofly FS2 require a payware utility called FlyInside to run in VR. It's a  fantastic program worth checking out.

In summary Virtual Reality is a huge advance in flight simulation technology.

Many flight sim programs have adapted to VR as the next level of flight simulation. Virtual Reality  has transformed your living room into a full scale "Holodeck" which could be considered quite amazing!

The KwikPit and VR

Of course the plans built KwikPit cockpit is the perfect cockpit for VR or conventional flight simulation.

Here the kwikPit is shown in itís normal configuration and with swing out arms  that can support the sensors for VR flight or other VR gaming programs. These arms were simply made from wooden extensions that can be conveniently folded back when not in use.
