                                                                                GA Flight Simulation

Since the news that Microsoft was out of the flight simulation software business a lot has changed. They are still indeed alive with the new title called Microsoft Flight. On one side many simmers that have owned previous versions of  Flight Simulator including FS2000, FS2002, FS2004 and FSX have expressed opinions of  the new title being more game like and lacking the realism of the previous versions. On the other hand it may be felt that Microsoft has created a new flight simulator that will appeal more to the general masses with easier to fly aircraft, more video game oriented flying and flying that can be done with a gamepad or just a mouse. The choice is yours it looks like a great way to get the masses into flight simulation.

The long time or hardcore simmers have not been forgotten with more of the current flight simulation software being improved. There are also improved offerings of free simulation software for all to try. All of these offerings are no slouches and offer great graphics and realism compared to a few years ago. No need for anxiety attacks, try them all!

                                 Microsoft Flight

February 29 was the release date for Microsoft Flight. This is a partial quote from their website. "Prepare for takeoff! On the heels of a successful beta, we’re excited to announce that “Microsoft Flight” will be available to download worldwide for free starting February 29, 2012".

They have some great videos of the new product. Check out the site and see if it's something that would be fun to own or just give it a try. I'm focusing on the "download worldwide for free" can't go wrong.

"Microsoft Flight lets players jump into the fun, freedom, and adventure of flight with no special hardware or past experience. If you have a mouse and a PC, you can fly!"

   X-Plane 10

X-Plane has been around quite a while and rivals FSX in many areas and surpasses it in others. Many simmers are looking at this title as their next new flight simulator as an alternative to Microsoft Flight. The new release is version 10 and it has a lot of improvements over X-Plane-9. However no software is perfect and there is a review of the software from one user and I will stress these are his opinions only.

FlightGear has always been a free open source flight simulator. The latest release is v2.6.0. Here is some info from the site.

"This new version contains many exciting new features, enhancements and bug fixes. Major improvements from v2.4.0 include reduced AI aircraft load times, easier graphics tuning, more sophisticated AI aircraft and improved usability.

FlightGear features more than 400 aircraft, a worldwide scenery database, a worldwide multi-player environment, detailed sky modeling, a flexible and open aircraft modeling system, varied networking options, multiple display support, a powerful scripting language and an open architecture.  Fly Legacy

Fly Legacy is the free version of the original Fly. This open source version is maintained by a French group that has developed it, removed some bugs and offer it as open source.

The site also has ad-ons for FlyII and Fly 2K. These were great flight simulators that rivaled Mocrosoft Flight Simulator early on. There are still many forums dedicated to this Fly, FlyII and Fly 2K. You can obtain a download and learn more about Fly at:  http://fly.simvol.org/.
